The Specially Designed Curriculum that is offered at M.I.L.L.S. Institute was created to reflect the needs of the children in the Turks and Caicos Islands. We strive to inject enjoyment and creativity into all of our subject areas.
This curriculum was developed by a highly acclaimed curriculum designer from Turks and Caicos but redevelop in South Florida. She pointed out the weaknesses in the curriculum used by the local Ministry of Education and discouraged us from utilizing it in its current form. She ably combined curriculum with elements of the US and British Curricula and added new elements of our own to develop what we call our “special recipe” for education. All of the topics selected are relevant to our TCI Culture and flow with the content of all our textbooks and workbooks.
This specially designed curriculum allows us to:
- Take ownership and pride.
- Be flexible, creative and innovative
- Target and address individual needs of students through tests
- Measure our school’s performance
- Make changes whenever necessary
Conduct
Students are expected to display courteous behavior at all times. Behavior such as fighting, cheating, cursing, stealing, and vandalism are all forbidden.
Corporal punishment is not allowed.
Attendance
Students are to attend school regularly and punctually. In case of unavoidable absence, a written excuse signed by parents must be sent to the school on the day of the absence. A telephone call to the office will suffice if circumstances do not allow a note to be sent. A medical certificate must be furnished if a child is out sick for more than two days.
Incentives and Sanctions
Honor-Roll Initiative Students achieving 80% and above in End of Term Tests are placed on the honor roll. Three consecutive Honor Roll awards result in the Teachers, Principals, or Director's Cup Awards at the end of year award ceremony. Honor Roll is divided into 3 categories :
- Teacher's Honor 80% - 84%
- Principal's Honor 85% - 89%
- Deputy Director’s Honor 90% - 94%
- Director's Honor 95% - 100%
Merits Students may be given a merit for good work and outstanding performance in any aspect of school life. A merit is equivalent to 5 points. Points will be recorded by the class teacher.
Demerits A Student may be given a demerit for breaches of school rules such as:
- Lateness
- Poorly done class work
- Failure to do homework
- Other matters as decided by the teacher or principal
Demerits will be recorded by the class teacher. A parent-teacher conference will be called after a child has received a total of 3 demerits in any given period.
Progress Reports
Students from Kindergarten 2-Grade 6 are administered a weekly test every Friday based on content taught during that week. Termly examinations are administered and reports are issued to parents at the end of each term.
A general P.T.A. is held at the beginning of each school year term. All classes have a Parent-Teacher meeting at the beginning of each termr but parents are welcome to visit the school and meet with their child’s teacher at any scheduled time to check on their child’s progress.
